When designing a high performance building, it is important to view the building as an integrated network of systems. If one system is ignored, the potential for others to be affected is great, and overall performance could be compromised. Building system design includes the project site, water management, energy loads, HVAC systems, lighting design, envelope design and glazing. Because project site issues, building orientation and envelope design are critical to the beginning a successful high performance building project, this course will focus primarily on site and envelope design strategies. Topics included are:
- Greenfield versus pre-existing site issues
- Stormwater management
- The importance of building orientation
- ASHRAE 90.1 code requirements
- Wall and roof insulation design
- Moisture control & air sealing
- Glazing and daylight design strategies
TARGET AUDIENCE
Building owners, design teams, contractors, product manufacturers and others responsible for the design and construction of high performance buildings. |

- Assess a project site and proper building orientation on that site to maximize the potential for energy efficiency.
- Design envelope systems efficiently to reduce loss of energy and avoid moisture problems through leakage.
- Understand glazing characteristics as relates to energy performance.
- Differences in the codes requirements for ASHRAE 90.1-2007 and 2004.
